Unstoppable follows the real life story of pro American surfer, Bethany Hamilton. Born in Kauai, Hawaii to a family of surfers Bethany knew she wanted to be a professional surfer since the age of 8. However her dream was threatened when she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark at 13 years old. This resulted in her losing her left arm and seemingly her goals. Fortantley with the determination Bethany had, even at such a young age, saw her returning to competition just one month after her accident. Another 2 years later Bethany would win her first national surfing title. The key reason behind her strength was her faith. She credits this as what carried her through her injury and entire career but also into a new stage of her life, motherhood.

The main theme of Unstoppable would be triumph. Throughout her life Bethany has had to face adversity in various situations.Starting with the obvious as she lost her arm in a terrible accident, she had to learn how to do basic movements all over again. This would be difficult enough for any person, but Bethany had to deal with the added stress of being an athlete and needing to get herself back in top physical condition in order to compete. Furthermore, she then had the eyes of the world on her as her story was out there for anyone to see which led to televised tv interviews and even a guest spot on Oprah’s talk show. However all this media swarm would only cause the young Bethany more harm. All the attention left her quite vulnerable as she would constantly hear herself referred to as disabled or “shark bite girl” in the news and online, leaving her feeling like she was being put in a box. Thankfully Bethany’s determination, faith and love for her sport gave her the strength to pull through tough times, and come out a six-time world champion and top-ranked surfer.

Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable is truly an inspirational film. Starting out as quite a tragedy Bethany’s strength through the toughest times in her life show her true character. Her ability to overcome losing an arm yet become a professional athlete is a feat not just anybody can accomplish. If you ever need a movie to inspire you, Unstoppable is a great option!

Another reason I loved this film and think you will too is the amazing scenery. With many scenes from Bethany’s home of Hawaii the beautiful beaches and amazing waves are enough to have anyone wanting to jump into the water.
