Ask the Sports Industry 1 answer

What should you actually say when asking someone in sports for an informational interview?

I want to reach out to professionals without sounding generic or asking them for a job. What makes a cold email or LinkedIn message more likely to get a response?

Make the message easy to understand and easy to answer. Briefly introduce yourself, explain the specific reason you chose that person, and ask for a small amount of time to discuss one area of their experience. A message such as “I am exploring partnership activation and noticed you moved from ticketing into partnerships. Could I ask you three questions about that transition on a 15-minute call?” is much stronger than “Can I pick your brain about sports?” Do some research first, avoid attaching a resume unless it is requested, and follow up once if there is no response. The purpose is learning and relationship-building, not disguising a job request.
