What actually helps you land your first sports marketing job?

I keep seeing entry-level sports marketing roles asking for experience, even when they are described as junior. For people who have hired or been hired recently, what made the biggest difference: internships, a portfolio, networking, analytics skills, or something else?

For junior marketing hires, evidence beats a long list of interests. A small portfolio showing a campaign brief, a social/content example and the result you were trying to drive gives the interviewer something concrete to discuss. Internships help, but the strongest candidates can explain what they personally did and what changed because of it.

From the hiring side, I would add that tailored applications matter. A candidate who clearly understands the team, league, property or audience usually stands out more than someone who sends the same sports resume everywhere.
