A Life Too Short: The Tragedy of Robert Enke tells the unfortunate story of Robert Enke. Enke, a former German footballer, took his own life back in 2009. He was only 32 years old and left behind his wife and his daughter, who was only 10 months old at the time of his death. From the outside looking in, Enke had the perfect life. He already had his family and an amazing career. He played for many different clubs in Europe including FC Barcelona, SL Benfica, and his current team before his passing, Hannover 96. In this book written by Enke’s close friend, Ronald Reng, Reng goes into detail about the mental health struggle Enke faced throughout his career.

In life we tend to believe that all our problems can be solved with fame and money. In Enke’s case he had success with many different European teams, and was slated to be Germany’s number one goalkeeper for years to come. He even had his sights set on the 2010 World Cup, which makes his death even more shocking. In his personal life Enke had faced a number of difficult situations. In 2006 his 2 year old daughter, Lara, passed away due to a heart condition. This reportedly triggered his mental health issues, and with the arrival of his second daughter he was terrified he would lose her too.
Despite being published in 2012, A Life Too Short, is still extremely relevant in today’s society. After his death coaches and general managers are taking mental health more seriously than ever. His life and this book subsequently opened up the door for more athlete’s and people in general, to realize how important mental health is and to seek help.

There are so many reasons you should read A Life Too Short: The Tragedy of Robert Enke. For starters, it won the 2011 William Hill sportsbook of the year. Furthermore, this book provides an excellent in-depth look at Enke’s life. Before reading this book I was curious to see how it could provide such detail on someone else’s life, however, I soon learned that Robert Enke and author Ronald Reng were actually good friends. This permitted for a more honest and thoughtful analysis of Enke’s life and allowed us to learn more about the authentic moments Enke and Reng shared.
Mental health is also very relevant in today’s society. Back in 2009, depression was quite a taboo topic, especially for anyone struggling with these issues to talk about openly. This was even more difficult for Enke to feel free speaking out about, as he was worried he would face scrutiny from the public. Now more than ever mental health issues is something that must be talked more about. By raising more awareness for the topic, we can bring more attention to these issues and erase the stigma. For these reasons, A Life Too Short should be a must-read for everyone.
