Is amateur sport a good first step if your long-term goal is professional sport?

I am interested in eventually working for a professional team, but most of the opportunities available to me right now are with amateur and community organizations. Do employers in professional sport value that experience?

Yes, if the work is transferable. Hiring teams care about what you handled: revenue, events, partnerships, communications, operations, volunteers, budgeting or stakeholders. A strong role in amateur sport can give you broader responsibility earlier than a very narrow role at a larger organization.
