Start with humility and relationship-building. Indigenous sport organizations and communities should define their own priorities, so the goal is not to arrive with a ready-made program. Learn from Indigenous-led organizations, understand the history and local context, and build experience in community development, program delivery or administration where listening and partnership are central. If you are not Indigenous, be clear about the role you are there to play and avoid presenting yourself as the expert on a community’s needs. Respectful work is built through trust, continuity and accountability, not a one-time initiative.
