Look for roles that expose you to the building rather than only one event function. Guest services, conversions, event operations, maintenance coordination, security operations, loading docks, premium services and venue administration can all provide useful experience. Learn how departments coordinate around schedules, safety, vendors, contractors and changeovers. Facility managers need strong operational judgment, documentation and communication because the building is shared by many stakeholders. If you want to move up, seek opportunities to own checklists, staffing plans, work orders, post-event reports or small projects that demonstrate you can manage systems, not only complete assigned tasks.
