Ask the Sports Industry 1 answer

How do you find a mentor in the sports industry without awkwardly asking a stranger to “be my mentor”?

What is a better way to build the kind of relationship that can become mentorship over time?

Start with smaller interactions. Ask thoughtful questions, act on useful advice and follow up with progress. If you repeatedly have productive conversations with someone and there is mutual trust, the relationship may naturally become mentorship without a formal label. You can later ask whether they would be open to an occasional check-in rather than a broad, undefined commitment. Also remember that one person does not need to provide every kind of guidance. A manager, former professor, peer and industry contact can each help with different parts of your development.
