You should be able to understand a budget, basic revenue and expense categories, margin, forecasting and the financial impact of your decisions. A marketer should understand campaign cost and return; an event manager should track actual versus budget; a partnerships professional should understand commercial value and delivery costs. You do not need to become an accountant, but financial literacy makes your recommendations more credible because sports organizations are businesses with limited resources. Practice reading simple profit-and-loss statements and connecting your function to revenue, cost or strategic value.
