Is ticket sales still one of the best entry points into professional sports?

It is still a strong entry point because you learn the customer, the product and the commercial side of the organization very quickly. It is not the only path, and you should not take it if you dislike selling, but strong performers can build a very visible track record.

I have seen people move from ticketing into partnerships, CRM, marketing and service. The transition is easier when you use the sales role to learn more than your quota and build relationships across departments.
