Career Guide
About This Role
A Player Care Manager organizes non-clinical support that helps athletes navigate relocation, practical life arrangements and access to appropriate services. The scope may include onboarding, travel-related personal needs, family orientation and signposting to qualified wellbeing resources. Player care should not be confused with practising medicine, psychology or immigration law.
The manager may help new players understand housing processes, local transport, club contacts, education options and approved referral services. Support should be delivered discreetly and equitably, with clear expectations about what the club can arrange and who holds sensitive information. Not every personal concern belongs in a coach’s performance report.
What the work looks like in practice
A newly signed player is moving internationally with a family. The manager checks the authorized relocation benefits, coordinates arrival information, helps the player find the appropriate legal or professional advisors and records which arrangements have been confirmed. They should not offer unqualified immigration advice or promise a visa outcome.
Decisions, responsibilities and limits
Boundaries around confidentiality, safeguarding and conflicts of interest are essential. Clinical mental-health needs require licensed professionals, immigration questions require appropriately qualified advisers and contract disputes belong with authorized legal or personnel staff. The player care team helps people reach the right support without acting as all those specialists.
Skills employers can evaluate
Candidates can demonstrate careful case coordination, empathetic communication, cultural awareness and sound record management. A fictional onboarding plan should show responsible contacts, permissions and follow-up points without collecting unnecessary personal details. Experience in athlete welfare or people operations can be relevant.
How to build experience in this field
Entry routes include team services, athlete support programmes, community relations and human resources. Ask what services the club funds, who holds confidential information, how emergency welfare concerns are escalated and whether the role covers academy athletes or only the senior squad.
Common career questions
Is Player Care responsible for medical treatment?
No. It can coordinate access and practical support, but assessment and treatment belong to appropriately licensed healthcare professionals.
Does the manager negotiate housing and immigration agreements?
They may arrange logistics within approved policy, but legal advice and contractual decisions require the appropriate authorized specialists.
