Career Guide
About This Role
A Sport Integrity Officer helps a governing body, league or organization put policies into practice that protect fair competition and participants. The remit may involve competition manipulation risk, reporting systems, education, conflicts of interest or coordination with independent safeguarding bodies. The title does not automatically confer investigative or disciplinary authority.
An officer may maintain policy registers, assess procedural risk, arrange training and guide people to the correct reporting mechanism. Clear intake and escalation pathways matter because an integrity concern can involve confidential allegations, potential criminal conduct or decisions reserved for independent organizations. The officer should understand which body handles each type of complaint.
What the work looks like in practice
Consider a report that someone connected to a team may have shared sensitive match information for betting purposes. The officer records the report through the authorized mechanism, protects evidence appropriately and refers it according to policy. They must not conduct an unauthorized private investigation or publish names before allegations are assessed fairly.
Decisions, responsibilities and limits
Independence, procedural fairness, confidentiality and avoidance of conflicts are central. Sport integrity frameworks vary by country and governing body; an officer cannot assume that a Canadian complaint system also governs a US competition. Employees should have clear protections and advice about how to report concerns without exposing themselves unnecessarily.
Skills employers can evaluate
Candidates may bring experience in compliance, investigations support, ethics education or sport governance. Strong work samples include a risk register and a decision tree showing when a matter must be referred. Never use real case files or identifiable complainants in a portfolio.
How to build experience in this field
Entry routes include policy administration, safeguarding support and sport operations compliance. Ask who receives complaints, which independent bodies have jurisdiction, how evidence is preserved and whether the job is educational, operational or formally investigative.
Common career questions
Does a Sport Integrity Officer investigate every complaint?
No. Some organizations refer serious matters to independent units or other authorities. The officer’s actual legal and delegated remit is critical.
Is integrity work only about match fixing?
No. Depending on the organization it can also cover reporting procedures, conflicts of interest, ethical conduct and participant-protection coordination.
