About the Role
The Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Sport (CCMHS) is a national charitable organization dedicated to improving the mental health of competitive and high-performance athletes through specialized care, education, research, and advocacy.
As our organization embarks on an exciting new chapter, the CCMHS is seeking a full-time Executive Director to lead the organization in advancing its mission, broadening its national impact, and building on the strong legacy and foundation created by prior leaders. This role is ideal for a leader who is deeply committed to the intersection of mental health and sport and understands the importance of accessible, evidence-informed care, education, and research. Working closely with the board, staff, practitioners, researchers, partners and donors, the Executive Director will help strengthen the organization’s long-term sustainability while ensuring its mission remains at the centre of every decision.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide visionary strategic, operational, and organizational leadership to enable the CCMHS to expand its national impact while continuing to build a sustainable, high-performing charitable organization. The Executive Director will serve as a key partner to the Board of Directors, translating the Board’s vision into measurable organizational outcomes while supporting effective governance, strategic planning, performance monitoring, and organizational accountability.
This role is ideal for a leader with demonstrated knowledge and credibility in the mental health and sport sectors who understands the unique strengths and challenges facing the sport community including athletes, coaches, staff, administrators, and parents. The successful candidate will be comfortable engaging with clinicians, researchers, sport leaders and organizations, donors, government partners, and various sport participants while building trust and advancing the CCMHS’ national mission. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an evolving environment where they can help define strategy, build organizational capability and create long-term impact. Over the two-year term, the Executive Director will help position the CCMHS for sustainable growth by strengthening operations, expanding partnerships, diversifying revenue sources and increasing national awareness of the organization’s mission.
Executive Director Key Priorities Success in this role will be measured by the Executive Director’s ability to strengthen the CCMHS’s impact, deepen trust within the sport and mental health communities, and build on the organization’s strong foundation. Key priorities during the first two years include:
Mission & Community Impact
- Strengthen relationships with athletes, coaches, sport leaders and organizations, clinicians, researchers, donors and government partners.
- Expand awareness and access to CCMHS’s care, education, and research programs across Canada.
- Champion the organization’s mission and serve as a trusted ambassador within the Canadian sport and mental health communities.
People & Culture
- Build and sustain a collaborative, high-performing, inclusive, and psychologically safe organizational culture.
- Recruit, lead, develop, and support staff, contractors, practitioners, and volunteers to deliver exceptional service to the sport community.
- Establish clear roles, expectations, accountability measures, and opportunities for professional
growth and development.
Organizational Leadership
- Build on existing operational strengths and enhance organizational effectiveness.
- Partner closely with the Board of Directors to support effective governance, strategic planning, policy development, organizational performance monitoring, and informed decision-making.
- Ensure the organization operates in compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, privacy, charitable, financial, and employment requirements, while promoting ethical conduct, risk management, and responsible stewardship.
Organizational Sustainability
- Strengthen the organization’s long-term financial sustainability through partnerships, fundraising and diversified revenue.
- Apply strong financial understanding and judgment to interpret financial information, assess risks and implications, and make strategic decisions that support the organization’s overall financial health.
Professional Qualifications We are seeking a mission-driven individual who combines strategic leadership with credibility in the mental health and sport sectors. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships, inspire collaboration, and advance meaningful outcomes for the communities the CCMHS serves.
Candidates may come from mental health, sport, charitable, healthcare, research, education or public sectors and should bring a passion for improving mental health outcomes for the competitive and high-performance sport community.
Candidates bring many of the following:
- Strong understanding of the intersection of mental health and sport in Canada, including the unique needs of competitive and high-performance athletes, coaches, staff, and sport organizations, and the ability to represent the CCMHS credibly and confidently to partners, funders, donors, senior leaders, the media, and service users.
- Master’s degree in a relevant field such as human kinetics, psychology, sport management, social work, health sciences, nonprofit management, business administration, or a related area.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current research and emerging evidence in mental health and sport.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships and strategic partnerships with sport organizations, healthcare professionals, researchers, donors, government and community partners that advance organizational impact and service delivery.
- Strong strategic, financial, and operational leadership skills.
- Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and influencing abilities.
- Strong people leadership experience, including recruitment, performance management, team development, and fostering inclusive and psychologically safe workplaces.
- Demonstrated success securing government, philanthropic, or other sustainable funding.
- Strong understanding of governance, risk management, privacy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance requirements relevant to charitable and service-based organizations.
- Experience working with and reporting to Boards of Directors, including supporting governance processes, Board and committee engagement, strategic planning, policy development, and organizational performance reporting.
- Bilingualism is considered a key asset.

Employment Details
- This is a full-time, two-year fixed term employment position with the possibility of extension, subject to organizational needs, performance, and available funding.
- We are offering a competitive annual base salary of $120,000 to $140,000, commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications, demonstrated leadership capabilities, and alignment with the scope and responsibilities of the role.
- The successful candidate will become an employee of CCMHS and will receive a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience.
- The successful candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada for the full duration of the two- year term.
- The successful candidate will be required to provide a valid social insurance number and appropriate documentation confirming their authorization to work in Canada before commencing employment. The CCMHS is unable to provide immigration or work permit sponsorship for this position.
Working Conditions
- The role may require occasional evening or weekend work for Board meetings, events, presentations, or urgent organizational matters. Some travel within Canada may be required.
- The Executive Director will work with sensitive personal and organizational information and must maintain the highest standards of confidentiality, privacy, professionalism, ethical conduct, and discretion.
- This position is performed remotely. The successful candidate is responsible for providing and maintaining an appropriate home office environment, including reliable internet access and required work equipment.

Founded in 2018, it delivers interdisciplinary mental‑health services to elite athletes, coaches, performers and sport support staff across Canada. The centre combines psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychiatrists and medical doctors to offer virtual and in‑person care, diagnostic assessments, education and outreach. CCMHS collaborates with national sport organisations on research and policy to promote psychologically healthy and safe sport environments.
