The opportunity

About the Role

The Director of Officiating will work with the HNO Membership and Officials to ensure that items and services required for the membership are completed and executed as per requirements.

Extent of Supervision

  • The Director of Officiating will be responsible to the Executive Director.

Description of Responsibilities

  • Staff resource to member RIC’s
  • Design and manage official development pathway in alignment with Hockey Canada’s Officiating Pathway
  • Manage Hockey Canada Officiating Program (HCOP) clinic supplies and HNO Resources
  • Deliver orientation for HCOP clinic instructors annually
  • Review and prepare HCOP certification and curriculum
  • Schedule and manage clinic delivery as necessary
  • Prepare directives and technical bulletins to HNO Officials as directed
  • Design and administrate the official mentorship program
  • Design and deliver officiating promotional material (videos, PSAs, media etc.)
  • Design and deliver high performance clinics and programs
  • Review and develop HNO Hockey officiating recruitment and retention plan
  • Review game incident reporting process annually
  • Regularly review officiating program policy
  • Review and manage officiating governance structure
  • Nominating officials for Officiating Program of Excellence (OPOE), Hockey Canada NHP and any other high performance events
  • Performing, overseeing, and managing supervisions for the branch
  • Manage complaints, investigations, and conflict resolution pertaining to officials
  • Develop and review operating budget for officiating
  • Act as the RIC for regional and branch hockey championships when required
  • Schedule officials for branch championships, T.O.C. and HNO events
  • File board reports for directors’ meetings and the Annual Meeting
  • Attend Hockey Canada officiating meetings
  • Additional duties may be delegated by the HNO Executive Director

Candidate Requirements The Director of Officiating will have a university degree, diploma, or appropriate experience, preferably in sport management, as well as 3-5 years of demonstrable experience. The candidate must be able to be certified in the Hockey Canada officiating program. In addition, this staff member will possess a combination of the following highly desired experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of hockey programming at the branch level
  • This role requires a high level of initiative, strong personal direction and event travel
  • Strong knowledge of the Hockey Canada officiating program
  • Experience officiating minor hockey and above
  • Preference may be given to candidates who achieved a minimum level 3 certification in the Hockey Canada officiating program
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively verbally and written
  • Strong organizational, time management, and client service abilities
  • Proficiency in computer systems (microsoft office mandatory)
