Here Comes the Boom

Scott Voss, a former division 1 collegiate wrestler,  is a biology teacher at Wilkinson High School. The school is having cash problems and needs to make cuts to certain programs. Not wanting these cuts to happen Scott decides to raise money to prevent them. As a night instructor for an adult citizenship class, he learns a student of his is a former MMA fighter. And when visiting him for a lesson outside of class, catches an MMA fight on TV. He learns you can make a lot of money even by losing and decides to go that route to raise the funds he needs. He begins in unsanctioned fights and realizes that wins provide bigger payouts. He needs that cash to save his school and students, but is he up for the challenge?

Here Comes the Boom is the player side of sport with Scott Voss going from teacher to MMA fighter. Now, in reality, this is obviously very unrealistic. With his age and the shape he's in, Scott isn't your ideal fighter. If anything, he's better off in small local fights, and even that's a danger. But he will not accept that. Not when it comes to saving his school. With his training, and getting experience, he begins to want more, and those opportunities arise. He gets an offer for a fight in the UFC. But others have ulterior motives and that fight is almost denied at the hands of who he thought was a friend.

It's something all athletes need to keep in their minds as well. Not everyone is going to be looking out for their best interests. Whether it's trainers, agents, friends or family, someone might see the fame and fortune they're getting and take advantage of that. Scott even faces the worrisome issue of a colleague embezzling the money he's been earning from fights. Now he has to win or everything he did was all for nothing. As viewers, we all root him on, and then in our own lives, we remember to watch our own backs.

You can't help but watch Here Comes the Boom and support Scott Voss even though you know he's going to get a few beatings of his lifetime. The love and support he has for his staff, students and school is admirable and his efforts to raise funds go above and beyond what is necessary. In such a brutal sport, his care for others shines above all. And with some comedic bits thrown in and other great supporting characters, you'll be laughing along the way. Sometimes, fighting movies will find you in fighting stances and random fake punches and kicks. This one will want you to fight for what you care about, just like Scott. It's funny, wholesome and involves sport so if you haven't yet seen it, give it a shot!
