Brian's Song

Although they both play for the Chicago Bears, Brian Piccolo (Sean Maher) is white, a joker and mostly rides the bench while Gale Sayers (Mekhi Phifer) is black, serious and a rookie superstar. Neither likes the other much, but when coach Halas (Ben Gazzara) makes them the first interracial roommates in the NFL, the two gradually form a sincere friendship. Piccolo helps Sayers overcome an injury, and Sayers later gives Piccolo much needed support when he's diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Brian and Gale have always had a few similarities.They both love the sport of football and have had to overcome challenges to get to the professional level. That being said, the two do not get along until their coach forces them to move in together. From that point their friendship grows and allows them to become better teammates and faces a number of challenges, from injuries to cancer. This shows us that although not all teammates might get along, they must come together to improve their relationship for the sake of their team.

The story of strength, determination and friendship is something we see quite often in sport. For many of us, it is probably what attracts us to sport. Brian’s Song focuses on these key themes. The way Piccolo helps Sayers not only overcome racial injustices but his career-threatening injury is quite inspirational. Sayer repays Piccolo for everything by returning the favour and supporting him through his cancer treatments.
