About

Believe: My Faith And The Tackle That Changed My Life follows the inspiring story of Eric LeGrand. Eric once played defensive tackle at Rutgers University. However, his college career would sadly come to an end on October 16, 2010, when Eric suffered a crushing tackle. This left him paralyzed from the neck down, and a long road to recovery ahead. His injury was so bad that doctors believe he wouldn’t be able to breathe without a ventilator. However, just one month later Eric was able to breathe on his own without assistance. In his book he mentions the one positive from his accident is that it led him on a journey to find his faith. Since then, he believes he has lived the best years of life.

Believe: My Faith And The Tackle That Changed My Life's Relation To Sport Business

Eric’s story tells us a lot about life after sports as well as the health struggles he had to overcome. In Eric’s case, if it wasn’t for his injury he would’ve finished his playing career in college, and could’ve possibly even been playing professionally. Unfortunately for him his playing time was cut short but he kept a very positive outlook. This is what allowed him to transition into his next stage of life, life after sport. By discovering his faith, and remaining hopeful in times that could have easily turned to darkness and depression Eric was able to overcome the difficult situation he was placed in. Because of his positivity, he was able to lead his Rugter teammates onto the field just one year after his accident.

Why read Believe: My Faith And The Tackle That Changed My Life?

Believe: My Faith And The Tackle That Changed My Life is such an important read for sport professionals or even just sport fans in general. For starters, it teaches us to never give up despite tough circumstances. In Eric’s example, his strong demeanour allowed him to never give up. Although Eric is paralyzed from the neck down, and will never be able to play football again, he continues to push his body to limits previously never thought possible.

Another reason this book belongs on our Shelf is to never forget Eric’s story and the safety precautions coaches and players need to keep in mind. In Eric’s situation, he knew to keep his head up during the tackle but his opponent ended up tripping and slamming his shoulder blade into Eric’s head. Even though this was a freak accident, continued safety training and improvements to equipment is something that will always benefit sport.
