Ryan Dunne is a high schooler who works for his father's company mowing lawns. One of the areas he works at is at Veteran's Field, home of the Chatham A's. As a baseball player himself, he has the dream of one day playing in the MLB. However, his father doesn't believe he will amount to anything. In his efforts to go pro, he decides to stay away from women and drinking to get rid of any distractions. But, that changes when he sees Tenley Parrish, the daughter of one of their rich clients. Becoming distracted, he faces pressure to do well from scouts, friends, his family and the Parrish family. He'll have to try to regain that focus if he wants to get noticed and signed by an MLB team. But does he have what it takes, or are his dreams too high to accomplish?

Summer Catch's Relation To Sport Business

Summer Catch gives us a look at the amateur level of sport and an athlete trying to get noticed by scouts. Ryan Dunne's dream is to play in the MLB and from early on we see his determination to make that a reality. Making it a rule for himself, he promises no more women or drinking. He doesn't want the distractions and instead wants to fully focus on his hopeful future career as a professional baseball player. When we see his mindset change, however, he does end up distracted. One of his games goes poorly and he is demoted to a relief position. It seems like this would be where the dream ends. But, a scout from the Philidelphia Phillies still believes in him and wants to see more. This film gives us a look at the scouting side of sports, even if hidden within the genre of a rom-com.

Why watch Summer Catch?

Summer Catch is a rom-com that will be enjoyed by not just baseball fans, but fans of sports. Ryan's story is one of struggle that we can all relate to. Being a young athlete with a big dream and not much opportunity, we feel for him and root for him to make it big. Even with a new distraction, it doesn't change the fact that he wants to play in the Major Leagues. That determination is something we can all look at to never give up on our goals. And although it's not exactly a sports movie that sticks out much, it's still one worth giving a chance. If you're into rom-coms or baseball, try this one out.
