About The Game Plan

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson plays the main character Joe Kingman in The Game Plan. Kingman is a quarterback for the fictional Boston Rebels in the also fictional American Football Federation. From the beginning, we see he is living the bachelor lifestyle as a successful and single football player. But, the morning after he gets his team a big win, he gets the biggest surprise of his lifetime. Turns out, he has an 8-year-old daughter he never knew existed with a woman he once had a relationship with many years earlier. He has to change his bachelor lifestyle to be the father he has so far missed out on while also balancing playoffs in the AFF. Through this, he gets himself into many situations, including learning ballet for his little girl. But, being a father isn't always easy as he soon learns.

The Game Plan's Relation To Sport Business

Football is a big part of the movie with Johnson playing the role of a quarterback. Beyond that, we get a look at sponsorship as well as the media and how they can portray an athlete. For example, at one point, Kingman has a grand opening of his own restaurant. Incidentally, he forgets his daughter there when he leaves, which makes the front page of the papers the next day. He is portrayed as a bad father, which in his defence, he's still new to fatherhood. This isn't the only instance, however. Throughout the film, we see a few more mishaps, but Kingman is trying and improving. But is it enough, and can he keep his mind focused on the crucial final playoff games for his team?

Another part we get a glimpse at is a sponsorship opportunity. After making the finals, a fast food joint offers Kingman $25 million to drop its name to the press if they were to win the championship. It's a massive opportunity that shows just how much influence an athlete can have if their word is worth that much. One would only have to wonder if their values are in tune with their own and with their team's.
