About The Longest Yard

Paul Crewe, a former NFL quarterback, is enjoying a party and ends up drunk. In his state, he takes his girlfriend's car for a joyride which ends up in him being involved in a police chase where he crashes the car. As a result, Crewe is sentenced to 3 years in prison. He is transferred to warden Rudolph Hazen's prison, who wants to use him to coach a football team made up of prisoners to take on the guards to boost the morale of the prison. But when the prisoners start to do well, Hazen and the guards do whatever they can to make sure they remain on top. Crewe must keep his team focused if he wants to succeed. It's an important task with so much at stake. But can it be done? Or is there no hope with so much against them?

The Longest Yard's Relation To Sport Business

Life after sport isn't always easy as we see in The Longest Yard. Former quarterback, and disgraced one at that, Paul Crewe had been accused of point shaving. It was never proven but it left a stain on his career. And after a drunken night at a party that involved a crashed vehicle, he ends up with a 3 years prison sentence. Not an ideal turn of events for the former athlete. But he has that chance at redemption with the creation of the prison football team. Ideally, coaching an actual football would have been the better route. Plenty of athletes go on to coaching careers once their playing days are over.

For the inmates, it's something to look forward to. As prisoners, they don't get too many freedoms. Here, they get to become athletes to play in a sport and in a way, get back at the guards for any mistreatments they faced. Crewe's motivation is one that can lift spirits through sports and even more with any wins. For now, this will have to be his life until he can one day hopefully coach a team of his own outside of prison life.

Why watch The Longest Yard?

If you like football, comedies or underdog stories, The Longest Yard is a film you will enjoy. With 2 big names in comedy in Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, there will be no shortage of hilarious moments. Throw in some football and you've got yourself a sports comedy to remember. Now, it is a remake, so watchers of the original may not think it's up to par but it's still worth a watch. It was a success in the box office and continues to do well on streaming services such as Netflix. As a side note, this isn't the first time the movie was re-created. It has 2 other remakes in England and Egpyt. Though these films it's soccer instead of football. It just goes to show the worth it has in being remade over and over. This is definitely another one to add to the watch list but also throw in its predecessor before or after.
