Based on the real Marshall University team, We Are Marshall focuses on the events after a plane crash killed everyone on board, which most of the team was. They had just lost a game and were flying back home when their plane clipped some trees and went down just a mile short of the runway. After this tragic accident, University president Donald Dedmon wants to suspend the football program. But the students of Marshall University and the rest of the players who didn't make the flight ask that he reconsider and he obliges. Jack Lengyel is hired as the new coach to rebuild the Thundering Herd and restore the hopes of Marshall University with their success.

We Are Marshall's Relation To Sport Business

There are two things we get a look at in We Are Marshall. University football and a team that needs to rebuild after losing almost all of their team. The 1970 crash was a devasting one that killed players, coaching staff, their families and the flight crew. How does a team rebuild from that? Aside from the emotional toll on the players who weren't on the flight, they still need a lot more players on their team. They are able to do this by adding freshmen to their team, which at the time was not allowed but an exception was granted for the Thundering Herd. Along with them, players from other sports programs at Marshall University were brought on as walk-ons, making the new team a highly inexperienced one.

It's a sad tragedy we see often see in sport sometimes. Like the crash of the plane that killed Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense and the one that killed Russian hockey team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. These are two among others in sports history and sometimes, teams will struggle upon their return. The teams that built their success will always be remembered and continuing to play for them will the best thing to honour their memory and take them back to the success they once saw.
