About Jerry Maguire

Co-starring Cuba Gooding Jr and Renee Zellweger, Jerry Maguire is truly a love story wrapped around the disguise of NFL football. While Tom Cruise plays the title character Jerry Maguire, a brash sports agent that wants only to please himself, Gooding is an NFL superstar with an ego seeking a massive contract from the Arizona Cardinals. Zellweger is the single mom that Cruise falls for and opens his eyes to the selfishness he exhibits.

The way in which Jerry Maguire portrayed Cruise making a living from his own sports agent business with one client is unrealistic. Yet, wrapped in the glitter and romance of a Hollywood rom-com, it blinded many who pursued careers in the industry. Jerry Maguire did show that there are sports agents just looking to make their commission and get the best price possible for their clients. That may be the truest aspect of the film.

Jerry Maguire's Relation To Sport Business

The 1990s were a special time in sports. It was a decade in which more eyes were on them whether ice hockey, American football, soccer, baseball, or basketball. Thanks to the growth of satellite and cable television and the need to provide content, sports were broadcast far more than ever before. The exposure of sports led to a rise in Hollywood films tackling subject matter based around the NFL especially. Jerry Maguire didn’t focus on the actual playing of the gridiron game, rather its motivation was to showcase the mechanism behind the scenes.

Jerry Maguire was the first film to showcase the world of the sports agent. It didn’t just gloss over the industry either. Although Jerry Maguire didn’t show the grittier side of the industry that Ballers was praised for doing, it did display the pressures that sports agents are up against. The common perception presented by sports agents such as Scott Boras and Mino Raiola is that they are out to get their clients the most money possible simply to get their 4% or more cut. Jerry Maguire changed this perception and helped fuel the understanding from a lot of “smart” sports fans that athletes only have a finite time to be professionals and make a living.

According to sports business insiders, the film changed the sports agent and management industry with more young individuals becoming interested in it. Many joined the industry and began working in the sports world. Previously, the sports world was a close-knit segment but with more people seeing the exciting world of sports management, interest exploded.

There is no doubt that Jerry Maguire showed plenty of negative sides and bad points of the sports agent industry. The selfishness, greed, and corrupt attitudes that many agents and managers have. Yet, the film inspired high school and college kids of the late 1990s who had no chance of playing pro sports to simply get an education and represent those individuals capable of becoming professional.

Why watch Jerry Maguire?

Jerry Maguire belongs on The Shelf for being a seminal film. After Jerry Maguire, a generation of kids grew up not wanting to be athletes, but sports agents instead. According to a 2016 ESPN article, in 1991, the NFL had around 400 registered agents. By 2001, the league had over 1,000 agents. To say Jerry Maguire alone inspired so many individuals to become sports agents would be flawed as the NFL hit its peak in popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, Cruise, Gooding, and Zellweger had their impacts on the industry.
